FAQs
What Is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating misaligned teeth and jaws. It not only enhances the appearance of your smile but also ensures your teeth and jaws function properly.
What Is an Orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received additional training in straightening teeth and correcting jaw alignment. They have the expertise to help you achieve a healthier, more attractive smile.
When Should I Visit an Orthodontist?
You can visit an orthodontist at any age if you’re looking to improve your smile. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up around age seven. However, orthodontic treatment is effective at any age, with many adults also benefiting from treatment.
How Do I Care for My Teeth with Braces or a Retainer?
Good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Brush your teeth after every meal and floss daily. Use fluoride toothpaste and consult your dentist about whether a fluoride rinse is necessary. If you remove your retainer to eat, brush and floss afterward and store the retainer in its case. Keep your retainer clean by brushing it with toothpaste or soaking it as directed by your orthodontist. Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that could damage your braces, and continue to visit your dentist for regular checkups every six months.
What Are Braces?
Braces are orthodontic devices used to align your teeth and enhance your smile. There are various types of braces available, including clear braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces (placed behind the teeth), self-ligating braces, invisible braces (clear aligners), and traditional metal braces.
How Long Will I Need to Wear Braces?
The duration of time you’ll need to wear braces depends on your individual treatment plan. Most treatments range from 6 to 30 months, with the average treatment taking about 22 months.
Do Braces Hurt?
Braces generally don’t cause pain, but you may experience some discomfort for a few days after they’re first applied or adjusted. This is normal and should subside as your mouth adjusts.
Do I Need to Brush My Teeth More Often with Braces?
Yes, it’s important to brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and braces clean. Regular brushing prevents plaque buildup and tooth decay during your treatment.
Do I Still Need Regular Dental Checkups with Braces?
Absolutely. Regular checkups are important for maintaining overall oral health. Your dentist will work with your orthodontist to ensure your teeth remain healthy and cavity-free during treatment.
Will Braces Affect My Activities, Like Sports or Playing an Instrument?
Braces shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your regular activities. If you play sports, wearing a mouthguard is recommended to protect your teeth and braces. Most patients adapt to playing musical instruments with braces after a short adjustment period.
